Distinguishing Features

Known from scant northern records, P. arctica has been variously synonymized with P. porelloides and P. asplenioides. It is found in arctic and alpine tundra, where its dull green leafy shoots are no more than 2 mm wide. The leaves themselves are closely overlapping and are wider than or as wide as long, generally lacking teeth or with a few poorly developed ones. Confident identification of this species requires measurement of leaf cells under the microscope.
